Becoming A Storm Spotter If you're the type of person who is always fascinated by midwest weather, then you'll be interested in becoming a Skywarn Spotter. The NWS needs real time reports of severe weather and known damage to effectively warn the public. Even as new technology allows the NWS to issue warnings with more lead time, Skywarn spotters provide the ground truth verifying what the radar indicates and that occurring at the surface. Many Skywarn spotters are Amateur Radio Operators while others are local law enforcement officials, fire fighters, emergency management officials and your average "John & Jane Doe" weather enthusiasts. Together they provide a formidable force to observe and report Mother Nature's worst. Skywarn groups are organized and controlled by each NWS Forecast Office and are not part of any formal organization. If you would like to become a Midwest Skywarn storm spotter please contact Erick Schrier at erick.schrier@midwestskywarn.com. You will have to give the following information: My Name: My Location: My Email: My Phone Number: If you would like you can just copy and paste that to the email with the correct information filled out. ![]()
