Well folks, it's that moment we have been dreading to come, Road Construction Season is right around the corner. Let me point out a HUGE Project that will cause delays.

US Highway 61 Bypass at Hershey Avenue - Muscatine
Interchange Construction, Includes Grading and Paving, Overpass Construction, and Utility Relocation (if needed)
NOTE: One Lane in Each Direction, Hershey Avenue will be closed from Lutheran Drive to Newcomb Boulevard, both are Private Drives. Southbound Lanes will be completed first, then the Northbound Lanes.

Also to Note, Flooding is A MAJOR CONCERN this year, here is WHAT COULD HAPPEN:

Bridges That COULD Close:
County Highway G28/231st Street Bridge - Cedar River
Dougherty Bridge/County Highway F70/155th Street - Cedar River

THOSE are in Muscatine County, Iowa

I do not expect the Following to Close, but still could:

State Highway 92-Columbus Junction - Iowa River
U.S. Highway 61-Wapello - Iowa River
County Highway X99/Old State Highway 99-Wapello - Iowa River
State Highway 22-Nichols - Cedar River
U.S. Highway 6-Moscow - Cedar River
Herbert Hoover Highway-Rochester - Cedar River
State Highway 70-Columbus Junction - Iowa River
Tri-County Bridge-Lone Tree - Iowa River
State Highway 22-River Junction - Iowa River
County Highway F62-Hills - Iowa River

Those Are In Either Cedar, Johnson, Louisa, Muscatine, or Washington Counties in Iowa.

Also, If the Mississippi River Floods, Expect These Roads to Close:
Mississippi Drive-Between Pine Street and Oak Street
Mulberry Avenue-Between East 2nd Street and Mississippi Drive
Walnut Street-Between East 2nd Street and Mississippi Drive
Cedar Street - Between East 2nd Street and West Mississippi Drive
Sycamore Street - Between 2nd Street and West Mississippi Drive
Iowa Avenue - Between 2nd Street and West Mississippi Drive
Chestnut Street - Between West 2nd Street and West Mississippi Drive
Oak Street - From East 2nd Street to Mississippi Drive
East 2nd Street - From Mulberry Avenue to the Norbert F. Becky Bridge (Hwy 92 Bridge)
Washington Street - Lombard Street to Grant Street
East 5th Street - Park Avenue to Poplar Street

NOTE: ALL of Those Streets are in the City of Muscatine, Iowa

JUST WANTED TO GIVE A HEADS UP. If you know of any Road Construction Projects, Road Closures, Detours, or Anything Road Related, Post Them Here. Also, If possible E-Mail me at: Owen C. McCormickiowaweather.vp@Gmail.com

Welp, the Muscatine Hwy 61 Bypass is just about to start. Heads up if you use that highway, here is a Detour for local roads.

231st Street/Hershey Avenue - WEST OF The Bypass:
Go West on State Highway 22 to High Prairie Road. Turn left on High Prairie Road and follow that to 231st Street. ALSO....

Go West on 275th Street to Hampton Avenue, turn Right. Follow to 250th Street, turn Right. Follow that to Independence Avenue, then turn Left. Follow to 231st Street.

Hershey Avenue - EAST of The Bypass:
Option 1: Go East/Northeast on Grandview Avenue, then Turn left on Houser Street. Follow to Hershey Avenue.

Option 2: Go East on Mittman Road to Houser Street, then Turn Left to Hershey Avenue.

Option 3: Go East on Cedar Street, then turn South on Houser Street, follow down to Hershey Avenue. You can also Turn East at Lucas Street, then go South at Houser Street, depending on which way you are coming from.

This appears to be a project that will last through this year and into next year, 2009.

The Intersection of the Highway 61 Bypass and Hershey Avenue has always been Dangerous. Before 2005, all traffic on Hershey had to STOP at the Bypass. From 2005 until now, Signals have been in place, but that has made it hard for Trucks coming down the hill Southbound to Stop. The intersection is being converted into an Interchange. Overpasses and Ramps will be required.

The MAIN reason that there were so many accidents was because of Lutheran Homes, which is a Nursing and Independent Living Center just west of the intersection. But, the home has been there since the Early 20th Century, with multiple renovations of course.
